This is a Grail Page for me. I grew up reading Heavy Metal magazine and whenever I think of HM today I think of this page, Richard Corben, HR Giger , and Enki Bilal. In that order.
I'm a big fan of Leif Peng's Today's Inspiration which recently ran a great article about Luis Garcia Mozos . In doing a bit of poking around I discovered he was the artist of this page which has always been stuck in my head. A bit more poking around lead me to his Facebook site. Amazingly enough this page, which he drew in 1981 was still available. Let's not even mention that it is page 33, the age I was when I met my wife, or the fact that 3 has always been my favorite number. Let's not even bring that up because that sounds an awful lot like fate to me.
To see a scan of this simply does not do it justice so I will post some detail shots soon.

This one is a real beauty. I've been on the hunt for an original Zezelj for a while. This is the only piece I've ever seen for sale. Very sculptural in his use of white gouache. If you haven't seen much of his work check out Luna Park from Vertigo or Small Hands.

For The Blarg -- my first full illustration done in Manga Studio Pro. It ended up taking me 2 1/2 - 3 hours longer to execute than if I had just inked and scanned it. Still not sure what to think of the program. I found Sloth to be getting a little too Charles Burns for my taste. Well, maybe a poor, poor man's Charles Burns. Whatchoo think of the final outcome?

Big Number issue #3

So here's the story: Some guy bought issues 1&2 of Alan Moore and Bill Sienkiewicz's Big Numbers on eBay -- the only two issues ever published and he also gets a set of photocopies of the never seen before issue #3. So he contacts Alan and gets Alan's permission to post the whole thing online. So go check it out -- it's like the holy grail. We may never get to see the series finish but we have one more piece of the puzzle to let us dream about what it might have been like.

This is my cover illustration for Cathleen Falsani's book due out in the fall: "The Dude Abides: The Gospel According to the Coen Brothers."

In the book Falsani, an award-winning religion columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, examines the Coen Brothers -- looking at how Ethan and Joel present existential and theological questions in their films.

I'll be doing 14 black and white interior illustrations, one for each film, representing the good, the bad, and the ugly characters that inhabit the crazy worlds brought to life by these amazing auteurs. Those of you that know me know that this is a dream project. I did a series of Big Lebowski self-promo pieces a few years back which lead to doing this book. I'll be posting sketches of the work in progress. You can read more about the book here.

I saw Cheaters for the first time in years and Joey Greco has gotten creepier than when I did this portrait of him. Between segments he was talking about how you can go to Cheaters' website and hire a private detective yourself and he ended the pitch by saying, "I'll be waiting for you there." Wow -- that's a commitment to sliminess. Kudos Joey!
